Case Study

Heathrow Hub is the independent promoter of the proposal to Extend the Northern Runway (ENR) at Heathrow Airport Limited. It was one of only two schemes shortlisted and deemed viable by the UK Government’s Airports Commission.

The Extended Northern Runway has been designed to create additional capacity at Heathrow, by extending the existing northern runway westwards away from London, negating the need to build a third runway.

It is a much more cost-effective solution to increasing capacity and, as such, can be used to improve airport efficiency and optimise flight schedules before increasing Air Traffic Movements. Improved efficiency will lead to reduced congestion and will therefore reduce environmental impacts.

The proposal matches Heathrow Airport Limited’s own 3rd Runway scheme in terms of the additional capacity that can be delivered. However, it has many significant benefits as it is cheaper, greener, quicker and simpler to deliver, quieter and, crucially, it is safe, following an independent safety review.
