Runway Innovations Ltd is a privately-owned British company. It has designed the Extended Single Runway as a cost-effective solution for airports, to both optimise efficiency and flight schedules, thereby reducing environmental impacts, as well as to create additional capacity, subject to demand.
The concept is currently protected by a patent portfolio that includes granted patents in over a dozen territories including the UK, Europe, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, and the USA.
The Extended Single Runway is an innovative design that can increase air traffic movements (ATMs), allowing for simultaneous landings and take offs from an extended runway that creates two separate runways divided by a central, sterile safety area. The design encompasses offset and angled runways as well as in-line runways.
The concept was initially proposed by Captain Jock Lowe, the world’s longest serving Concorde pilot and former British Airways director of flight operations, as a specific proposal for expanding capacity at Heathrow Airport, called the Extended Northern Runway (ENR).
The ENR proposal was shortlisted by the UK Government’s Airports Commission as one of three proposals considered. It matched the increase in ATMs proposed by Heathrow’s own 3rd Runway scheme but with significant benefits: cheaper, greener, quieter, and simpler. It was deemed viable by the Airports Commission and an independent safety review confirmed it as a safe solution that met all relevant regulatory requirements.
