The Extended Single Runway is a cheaper, greener, quieter, simpler and safer solution to increasing airport capacity.
The Extended Single Runway, which creates two separate runway strips separated by a central sterile safety area, delivers additional airport capacity at a lower cost than traditional alternatives. It can be used to optimise airport efficiency as well as for increasing Air Traffic Movements (ATMs).
Crucially, its design can significantly reduce environmental impacts, including carbon emissions, by reducing congestion.
As illustrated below, the Extended Single Runway was one of two schemes shortlisted for Heathrow expansion by the UK Airports Commission.
